Responsibilities

 

Jacobi Medical Center is an American College of Surgeons verified Level 1 trauma center. It remains one of the busiest trauma centers in New York City with approximately 2000 admissions per year via our Emergency Department. As a Level 1 trauma center, Jacobi is equipped and resourced to handle all types of injury which may impact multiple body organ systems. Therefore, the Jacobi PA in trauma surgery will need to exercise flexibility and adaptability to manage a broad range of medical and surgical conditions under the supervision of an attending trauma surgeon. Because the spectrum of trauma surgery can encompass many organ systems, the Jacobi trauma surgery PA will become knowledgeable about a wide range of pathophysiology as well as know how to prioritize and manage injuries sustained. Trauma remains the leading cause of death in the first four decades of life and is surpassed only by cancer and atherosclerosis as a major cause of death in all age groups.

 

 

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Assist in the evaluation of the trauma patient and institute immediate therapy in the Emergency Department
  • Assist with post-operative or post injury management
  • Enable continuity of care by following up in the Trauma surgery clinic after discharge
  • Make rounds with the attending surgeon and resident staff.
  • Field patient calls and general follow up questions after hospital discharge.
  • Manage patients undergoing a broad range of procedures, including Orthopedic. ENT, OMFS, Urology and Vascular
  • Assist surgery resident with trauma and acute care surgery consultations in Emergency Department
  • Determine when appropriate consultation is needed and speak with that service
  • Opportunities to rotate through the surgical intensive care units
  • Opportunities for OR assist when resident staff not available
  • Opportunities to work in neurosurgery and 1st assist to neurosurgery OR cases
  • Interact with social work, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutritionist, etc. to facilitate a multi-disciplinary approach to management of patient

 

SURGICAL WARD DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Order and interpret appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies and collates data
  • Request and follow up on recommendations of consultants (usually after discussion with the surgeon)
  • Assesse fluid and electrolyte balance
  • Manages and remove tubes and drains
  • Formulate a differential diagnosis and confirm or refute the options according to the physical exam and data obtained
  • Identify and prioritize surgical, medical and psychosocial problems
  • Order and renew appropriate medications

 

Qualifications

  • JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.  Master’s degree preferred, but other PA degree levels are encouraged to apply.
    • Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the State of New York Department of Education
    • Board Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants ( NCCPA)
    • Some experience in general surgery, emergency medicine, or trauma is preferred. However, this position is open for the new PA graduates interested in growing their knowledge base.
