With approximately 60,000 admissions per year and 10,000 average daily population in twelve jails citywide, the NYC jail system is among the largest in the nation. The Division of Correctional Health Services (CHS) of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation is responsible for the delivery of medical and behavioral health care, social work services, discharge planning and reentry services 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. CHS is a national leader in the delivery of health care to the justice-involved population and works continuously to improve access to, and quality and continuity of, care within the jail system. 


CHS conducts a comprehensive medical and mental health assessment for every patient at the point of admission, offers robust screening for infectious diseases (HIV, hepatitis C, STDs, TB, etc.) and helps with the management of chronic and acute conditions.  CHS is committed to improving the quality and continuity of care provided to its patients both during and after incarceration, and to the population health of the communities to which our patients return. 





Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor and the Mental Health Unit Chief, will provide quality mental health care to the population of the New York City Department of Corrections  at BKDC. This position is responsible for providing assessment and counseling services to inmates.  This position is for Brooklyn Detention Center, the hours for the position are:  Tuesday thru Saturday, 4 p.m. to midnight.


  1. Provides mental health evaluations, crisis intervention, assessments, and follow-up care.
  2. Determines and coordinates disposition of patients for appropriate level of mental health care including discharge planning.
  3. Completes required statistical reports.
  4. Collaborates with the Department of Correction to ensure access to patients, proper housing, and treatment disposition.
  5. Coordinates patient care with other institutional programs.
  6. Develops and leads group treatment on mental health observation units and other units as assigned.
  7. Completes all required documentation.
  8. Participates in Clinical Supervision as assigned
  9. Participates in mental health and medical rounds as assigned. 
  10. Participates in case conferences and treatment planning for patients receiving and being considered for mental health treatment.
  11. May conduct psychological testing as assigned
  12. May supervise social work interns or student volunteers as assigned.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned by Unit Chief, Assistant Unit Chief, and Clinical Supervisor.



Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related field.


License:  New York State License in Social Work, License in Mental Health Counseling, or licensure in Psychology.
