In partnership with NYC Health + Hospitals, NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan provides care for over 313,000 outpatient visits, nearly 70,000 emergency room visits and more than 13,000 inpatient admissions annually. The hospital maintains an academic affiliation with New York Medical College.



The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Disease is maintained by 3 Gastroenterologist FTE and we average approximately 2500 procedures yearly. In the ambulatory clinic approximately 3500 patients are seen yearly. A Physician Assistant would enhance the care we provide to our patients while making it possible for gastroenterologists to be more efficient, perform more procedures, and focus time on more complex consultations. The PA responsibilities include:

Hospital-Endoscopy (60%):

  • Responsible for performing complete health histories, physical examinations, and psychosocial assessments of patients pre-procedure.
  • Reviewing all labs, medical clearances, radiologic procedures pre-procedure.
  • Ordering pre-procedure laboratory tests when needed.
  • Ordering blood products for routine procedures with the supervising attending physician authority.
  • Prescribing discharge medications.
  • Arranging clinic appointments, referrals, and radiologic procedures on discharge.
  • Review of all pathology post procedure. Maintain database of pathology records.
  • Communicate pathology results to patients, either by telephone or in GI clinic, as appropriate.
  • Rescheduling endoscopy procedures under the direction of a GI physician.
  • Coordinates with Patient Navigators for rescheduled patients.
  • Triages all semi-emergent GI walk-ins in the Endoscopy Suite. Organizes ER referrals or outpatient PCP referrals when indicated.
  • Participate in Motility/Manometry/pH/Bravo procedures.

Ambulatory-GI Clinic (40%):

  • Review all pathology and radiologic studies prior to patient visit.
  • Perform outpatient visits (billable) under physician direction, including
    • Perform complete, detailed and accurate histories and physical exams.
    • Review findings and pathology results with patients who have undergone endoscopic and other GI procedures.
    • Based on medical diagnoses, institute therapy or referrals of patients to the appropriate health care facilities, agencies, other resources of the community, or other physicians.
  • Provide instructions and guidance regarding medical care matters to patients.
  • Obtain Prior Authorizations and medication refills.
  • Maintaining patient database of clinical conditions which require regular follow-up and surveillance, in particular: patients on treatment for Hepatitis C, chronic Hepatitis B, inflammatory bowel disease, or Barrett’s esophagus and reschedule visits for patients who DNKA.



 Required Qualifications:


  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Physician Assistant certification/license
  • Minimum 2-3 years as an Physician Assistant preferred
