The Patient Care Associate (PCA) in the PASU in the Brooklyn central booking facility will perform basic medical and mental health screening of recent arrestees and refer to professional staff as indicated.

    • Ask patients a serious of standardized medical and mental health questions
    • Ascertain if patients are able to answer questions adequately and coherently
    • Record patient responses electronically
    • Refer patients to the nurse practitioner/physician assistant or social worker when indicated
    • Clean equipment, e.g., thermometers, B/P machine, EKG machine, suction machine, refrigerators, and other treatment equipment
    • Stock and replenish supplies in all clinic areas, including stationery supplies
    • Maintain cleanliness of surface area of treatment and exam rooms
  • Maintain security precautions with keys, locked areas, and equipment      


  • Anticipates and acts to maintain a safe environment
  • Performs job functions in a manner that promotes efficient use of resources
  • Respond and assist with emergencies when necessary
  • Perform other clerical and health-related duties associated with patient screening and care
  • May be expected to work shifts in the Manhattan Detention Center clinic
  • Contribute to the safety, care, and comfort of patients


The PCA may additionally be required to perform the duties listed below at some point in the future:


  • Perform HIV Pre- and Post-test counseling
  • Perform rapid HIV Test
  • Enter data in the rapid HIV database and electronic medical record
  • Fax rapid HIV testing information to the Nursing Office every tour
  • Perform Quality controls
  • Perform EKGs and fax information
  • Perform Nursing Follow-up as assigned
  • Assist with New Admission processing
  • Perform Veni-puncture


  • A four year high school diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  • BCLS Certification and Computer Competency required
  • Completion of a Patient Care Associates or Nursing Attendant Training    
  • Experience working with electronic medical records, Microsoft Office Suite
